Laser Dentistry

Dental lasers have several applications and benefits for use in dentistry. Laser is an acronym which stands for:

Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

Laser is a form of light energy. Due to its properties—Laser light is comprised of a single color and particular wavelength; it is collimated ( highly focused and directional) and is coherent (organized and in-phase)—laser has energy.

As a result of this light energy, dental lasers can be used to treat a variety of conditions. There are different types of lasers used in dentistry. The selective properties of lasers allows us to treat different conditions. The characteristics of laser light energy such as the degree of absorption and transmission; depth of penetration; affinity for water and the type of tissue encountered are important in their use in dentistry.

Lasers can be used to treat soft tissue, such as gum tissues. Dental lasers can be used to remove diseased gums, decontaminate infected gum pockets and recontour and reshape gum tissues. Dental lasers can also be used to remove soft tissue lesions such as wart like lesions and provide relief from canker sores, oral herpetic lesions or denture sores. Dental lasers can also be used on hard tissues such as bone and teeth. Lasers are used to remove tooth decay, often with little to no need for conventional local anesthesia (no shots); treat sensitive teeth; and treat teeth prior to placing sealants.

The advantages of using lasers are:

  • Frequently little to no use of local anesthesia (no shots) is needed
  • Less noise, more quiet and vibraton free versus the dental drill
  • More conservative and less traumatic than the dental drill in most cases
  • Less bleeding, not as traumatic, less invasive, less discomfort when used for surgical procedures and healing time is improved
  • Reduces the chance for infection (the laser kills bacteria)

As Swampscott Cosmetic Dentists, we have been utilizing laser technology for several years. It has changed the way we practice and provides numerous benefits in a progressive and comforting environment.
